Each product goes through several hands and geographies, bringing together a tapestry of stories and cultures. Handcrafted from scratch, each finished product is the fruit of endless days of hard work by a team of weavers, dyers, craftsmen and tailors.

Clothes are carefully hand stitched and detailed, integrating the traditional Indian craft practices of handblock printing, natural dyeing, sewing, and darning - often made in hand woven natural fabrics in various parts of the country. Our clothing cannot be all things to everyone, but we aim to support as many folks as possible through our products

Tālah Family

India is not all about trading and money. Working here has a lot to do with relationships and people. Relationships help people open up and trust your ideology. The Tālah family is small team of dedicated, talented and focused people.

From when we started nearly five years ago, we have always tried to build ethical relationships with our craftsmen - the weavers, artisans, dyers, printers, tailors, and embroiderers from the different geographies of our country to bring forth our designs. We believe in sustaining these relationships with collaborations over long periods of time instead of using their skills for just one season or a collection.

Our Weavers and Dyers

Our skilled handloom weavers are a testament to the artistry and dedication that goes into their craft. Their exceptional skills and tireless work ethic shine through in every textile they create. Always eager to push boundaries, they fearlessly experiment with different yarns, resulting in the birth of new, breathtaking textiles. Their ability to blend and combine various threads is nothing short of alchemy, leading to the creation of innovative and captivating designs.

These artisans are not content with the ordinary; they strive for excellence by constantly seeking fresh approaches and techniques. The loom becomes their canvas, and they paint it with intricate, beautiful motifs that tell stories of tradition, innovation, and artistic vision. Each thread is woven with purpose, and every motif carries the mark of their expertise. Their creations are not just textiles, but living testaments to their passion, creativity, and unwavering commitment to their craft. Through their hands, fabric becomes a medium of artistic expression, and each piece is a masterpiece in its own right.

Our pieces honor all the beautiful humans that have toiled for years to preserve our traditions and their craft. There is something special about owning a product that has been handcrafted specially for you.

Make Materials Matter !!

We are trying to recover the value of tradition and craft work and are finding that slow working process can produce positive results and add a distinctive value to a product. We aim to decrease the speed of production, consumption & disposing by placing greater appreciation on one’s purchase. One of the points of strength of a slow handloom production is the possibility of using and mixing different yarns and these are woven and compacted together, obtaining beautiful and non-standardized results. New faster power looms don’t give the same possibility of manufacturing as the old conventional handloom provides. The reduction in usage of electronics, power looms and technology in the process, the elements that are largely responsible for standardization has allowed the skills of the craftsman to once again become relevant. Enhancement of craftsmanship in designing often involves processes that are sustainable so avoiding the type of mass production that generally utilize large amounts of raw materials and consistently produces waste; a mode of production that is not correctly balanced into the environment.

Fabrics

We carefully consider our materials and work with our production partners to reduce waste, chemicals, and plastics that endanger our planet’s ecosystem.

We only use hand woven natural fabrics. Fabrics and materials are the essential first step for us when designing a piece. Several times a year we travel to multiple weaving clusters and work one-on-one with weavers to create authentic fabrics. We love fabrics spun and woven by hand. Their irregularities and imperfections contain the testimony of their handcrafted origin and of traditional and conventional methods. We practice the holistic kaizen philosophy of keeping on improving. We start with getting a sample yardage made of the materials being considered for a new style - sometimes it can be immediately clear if a fabric is the right fit or not - other times, it can take several attempts before we have the fabric we envisioned in our hands.

Fabrics then get wash and wear tested to see what works best with the patterns being considered. Once a material is selected, we order the yardage which can takes anwhere from days to months to arrive, longer if it’s custom developed fabric or colour. Our collections have spanned a range of types including muslin cotton, khadi, linen, mulberry silk, tussar silk, Iri, Nassi, Moonga, and malkha fabrics. These are then made into fluid, relaxed and contemporary shapes.

Buttons

How unique are your buttons?

We place value in small things too and also consider how waste is responsibly disposed when crafting our products. We use wooden, shell, fabric and clay buttons for our garments, these are made from natural products, which can easily be recycled back into the environment unlike synthetics and polymers

Packaging

We opt for reusable khadi totes/ potlis because they lighten the load. We love hearing how our customers reuse our totes/potlis.

We make these in two sizes and they can hold everything you need for the day. We truly appreciate the little efforts taken to reuse and recycle. These utility bags come with every purchase

Pattern Drafting

Our patterns are designed both digitally as well as by hand - complex styles are generally drafted by hand and are often drafted flat.

We Believe!!

Small Scale Production

At Tālah, we take pride in designing our products in small and micro batches. We focus on creating collections that are season free or for just two seasons –winter/fall & spring/ summer instead of multiple micro seasons. Small scale production means better control of the product. The joy of wearing something that you know is one of a small number is hard to beat.

The concept is to build a perfect wardrobe not influenced by fashion trends, but with timeless and accessible pieces that will endure across seasons, from one collection to another.

Heritage

We believe heritage is about preserving traditional techniques, artisan methods and ideas that have been used for centuries. There is a reason why the clothes of by-gone eras survived to be sold as vintage.

We want you to wear our pieces for years and want them to be treasured, passed down and remembered, as every piece we make is breathable, handmade, timeless and comfortable. These are designed to sustain wardrobes of generations. Each piece is made with integrity and kindness from the highest quality materials, and created by skilled craftsmen of India. The techniques and skills of the craftsmen should be cherished and protected.

In some ways, zero waste is not new. Throughout history, consumers have had to adopt similar practices - like in olden times our grandmothers fashioned new outfits from old ones, new cushions, curtains, cloth bags from old sarees, dupattas, dresses etc. The difference now is that it has become an ethical choice, as well as born out of necessity.

As a business that produces new physical goods going out in the world, it is our responsibility to make every effort to minimise and mitigate any harm caused by our operations. We try to analyse the entire lifecycle of our products, and make improvements to extend usability and reduce waste wherever we can. We keep our waste to a minimum and try to create more with leftover fabrics.

We try following strategies for our Waste Not project

- Use special pattern cutting process to reduce or eliminate textile waste.

- Limited production runs

- Made to order for you

- The textile pieces and scraps from our core collections and previous collection are also used to create accessories, kids clothing, for layering as well as facing the garments.

- We also source dead stock of block print fabrics from printers in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The next step is making use of these materials, by designing products for our – SAHA (previously JOY) collection, by creating new pieces such as pouches, baby shoes, ipad sleeves, small potlis, accessories, toys etc. Any remaining waste is further used for facing in garments, loops and fabric buttons on the pieces etc.

Zero Waste
